Abstract: [en] This work presents a reading of “O guardador de rebanhos” by Alberto Caeiro, trying to explain the experience of perception figured in it and its possible philosophical repercussions. It takes as main references the theory of interpretation by Paul Ricoeur and the phenomenology of perception by Merleau-Ponty. We can recognize a proximity between the perspectives of Caeiro and Merleau-Ponty in the movement they focus what, in phenomenology, is known as “vivid world”. On other hand – besides the evident difference between the philosophical and poetic discourses, whose specific characteristics and possible relations are also considered – we can identify a distance between them, mainly according to a presence of significances in this primordial experience of the world. The movement of presentation of these relations with the world through the sensations found in the poetry of Caeiro is, in a certain way, more radical than that done by the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. As the aim of this work is to show the poetry of Alberto Caeiro, when revealing in his verses the thought and the language as obstacles to a real relation with the world, it shows a conception of perception as a direct experience made of “sensations”. It valorizes mainly, the look, that appears in the set of verses as a privileged sense of world understanding, a world that is shown as a visible “spectacle” to the subject. Destitute of significance – add meaning to them or think about them is “eye sickness” – the matters of the world would only be factual existents, visible to the subject in a direct relation to them. However, this perspective is revealed to be paradoxical when denying the thought thinking, the significance signifying its own experience, inviting to an abolition of language and the names naming, making use of language, talking of the nature and describing the visible scenery that is in the horizon of his view through language, even by a poetic language. The revelation as how these paradoxes are consisted in the poetry of Caeiro intends consequently to contribute to a better understanding of this poetry as well as to clarify some aspects of the relation with man, world and language, the central proposition in the contemporaneous philosophy.
